In my opinion the iPhone 4S just beats the Samsung Galaxy S2 to the post, as its apps and multimedia ecosystem (integration with iTunes, iPod and AppStore) are classic to those of the Samsung device. Hardware wise, they are on a fairly level playing field; therefore, I believe that selecting in the middle of the two comes down to an individual's personal preference for either Android or iOs. In reality, they are both great phones, and whichever handset one chooses, it is unlikely they will be left disappointed, as they both offer the best of their respective manufacturers' technology.

Top Ten Mini Laptops

Our latest Top Ten Mini Laptops as of May 2009. Once again we've trawled straight through dozens of our own and other peoples reviews and tried out the models and drawn our conclusions. We've based our results on practicality, functionality, cost and looks.

This month has seen the departure of any models from our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings, as newer models come out. These include:

Dell Inspiron Mini 9

The former Dell netbook whilst small and covenant was a compromised netbook, lacking the function keys, gift puny battery life, colour choice and storehouse and so it has exited our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings this month. However, the new larger Inspiron Mini 10 solves some of these problems. We've yet to delineate it, but on the face of it they've sorted out the keyboard, which is incidentally quite large and some other problems.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 remains very good value on a Vodafone covenant however, from nearby £20 per month. Consider separating the bundle and buying an Inspiron Mini 9 and Usb modem covenant separately and you would be spending nearby £30 more in total. Definetly worth a look...

Asus Eee Pc 1000

Asus introduced the Eee Pc 1000 after Msi brought out the first 10 inch netbook, the Msi Wind. With it's brother, the Eee Pc 901 they introduced a whole range of new features to the successful Eee Pc range along with large 6-cell batteries as appropriate and the now industry appropriate Intel Atom 1.6Ghz N270 processor.

However, as larger brands have put together there netbook offerings, the big Asus netbook has slid down the tables. Asus have updated the model bringing out the Asus Eee Pc 1000H, Eee Pc1002Ha and gorgeous variant - the Eee Pc S101.

Msi Wind

The Msi Wind although loved by some has exited our rankings for two uncomplicated reasons. Firstly, there are now bigger brands with great products such as the Samsung Nc10. Secondly, even if you did want to buy an Msi Wind you'd be wasting your money buying one. Why? Because you can buy an arrival 4211 instead! It's the same computer, with separate logos, but about £50 economy depending on where you buy. Even then, you'd be losing out. The new Lg X110 is not in fact that new - it's a restyled version of the Msi Wind which looks quite attractive. It also comes with 3G embedded.

So here we arrive at the Top Ten Mini Laptops Rankings... Beginning at the bottom:

#10 - Asus Eee Pc 701

The first netbook unveiled by Asus at Computex Taipei in 2007, which kicked off this entire industry trend, has once again reappeared in our rankings. Yes, it isn't as suited as newer models, yes it does have a smaller screen and yes it does cost up to half the price of the newer models. True to its netbook routes, it is still one of the smallest, cheapest and lightest netbook.

If you were inspecting going for a budget mini laptop (fair sufficient during harsh economic times!) there are some unbranded models. But it's all the time worth buying branded particularly with computers since you can take advantage of the after sales support network. For what it is, the Asus Eee Pc 701 is still a bargain!

#9 - Asus Eee Pc S101

Although we've previously ranked this netbook quite highly, Cnet still ranks it highly at their #3, but under it's appetizing skin there's not very much there, especially for the price they're request - £449. On closer inspection there's a derated battery - 4-cell instead of 6 like it more functionable brothers or not integrated 3G choice like on the Eee Pc 901. At about twice the price of similar spec, yet more suited models it's harder to elaborate a higher ranking anymore.

#8 - Toshiba Nb100

The Toshiba mini laptop has climbed the rankings thanks to some staggering price cuts. The Editor has found Amazon.co.uk shaved £50 off the £299 Rrp, with LaptopsDirect cutting a further £50 off that during April in a clearance sale. The computer isn't as good as some competitors such as the Asus Eee Pc 901, but the build capability is pretty solid and the brand holds a lot in its name so we Consider it a safe buy.

Toshiba have also unveiled plans for a larger 10 inch model boasting 160Gb of storehouse and 3G embedded. See New Mini Laptops

#7 - Lg X110

This pretty new laptop is infact based upon the pioneering 10 inch laptop, the Msi Wind. The corners have been rounded off to give quite an involving chassis, and the price tag isn't too bad either. The increasing of integrated 3G allows for connectivity wherever you can get mobile phone signal, not yet ready on contentious models such as the Hp Compaq mini 700 or Samsung Nc10.

#6 - Acer Aspire One

The Acer Aspire One family has grown to consist of the new D150 10 inch netbook. We've decided to merge the two for the sake of rankings. The price range for new model is similarly good value to its smaller brother, significantly economy than the £300 odd you'd expect to pay for the very latest netbook.

Despite the increasing to the range, the Acer has slipped slightly down the rankings as newer and great models enter the Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings.

#5 - Asus Eee Pc 901

The Asus Eee Pc 901 is a truly faultless netbook. It supplanted Asus' earlier 9 inch models, the Eee Pc 900 series introducing 6-cell batteries and Intel Atom processors as standard. Now ready for Free on covenant with Orange in a collection of colours the options are vast. We Consider it the best 9 inch conveyable mini laptop.

At the time of writing, the Asus Eee Pc is ready for nearby £25 per month on Orange Pay Month mobile Broadband.

#4 - Asus Eee Pc 1002Ha

The top end of the Asus Eee Pc range comes in the shape of the Eee Pc 1002Ha. faultless with a restyled chassis with inspiration taken from the seductively sleek Eee Pc S101 and the insides of the Eee Pc 1000H. Unfortunately, they've stopped a hairs breath away from making something quite overwhelming by failing to offer the 6-cell battery as appropriate like the earlier Eee Pc 901/1000 models. None the less it hit's #4 in our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings - a new entry.

#3 - Samsung Nc10

Samsungs low-key entry into the netbook world has been met with overwhelming sales success. The keyboard, crafted to make the letter keys larger and the estimate keys smaller to help with typing is approximately a match for an Hp netbook. Recently, O2 have partnered up with Samsung to offer a range of laptops on mobile broadband covenant along with the Nc10. O2 offers one of the great networks, with it being the sole victualer for the infamous Apple iPhone in the Uk. As well as providing an exquisite network, they also offer free Home Broadband for mobile broadband customers.

#2 - Hp Compaq Mini 700

Not shifting from last months Top Ten Mini Laptops is the Hp Compaq mini 700 which boasts the best keyboard in the netbooking world. You'd think it inevitable to stretch it right to the edges woudn't you, but few mini laptops do so. Although it does leave the trackpad a tad on the slim side, it's a much great interface than other contentious models. Retention it high in the rankings is it's price which has dropped significantly over the last few months to nearby £250-260, far less than the Samsung Nc10.

The Hp Compaq mini 700 is also ready on mobile broadband contract, with Orange and 3, although all in we don't find it as good value on covenant as the providers other offerings. For example, on Orange you pay a fiver extra for the Compaq over the Asus Eee Pc 901 for the same assistance - so it'll cost an extra £120 over the duration of the contract.

The new Sony Vaio P Series mini laptop was unveiled at Ces. Sony's new 8 inch, £849 "lifestyle pc" (Sony are vary wary to avoid the term "netbook") is less than 2cm thick and only slightly larger than an office envelope. It comes with a world of features along with 3G mobile Broadband, inbuilt Gps, Windows Vista, battery life of up to 8 hours, Ssd storehouse of up to 128Gb and amazingly weighs less than 640g!

Also included in the update is an upgrade to the existing iPhone 4 camera which increases the speed it takes to capture a photograph by using a two touch function on the main home button for instant passage even when the phone is locked, no more needing to enter a safety code.

Samsung has come with a mid-range Android phone - Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 to build on the success of its predecessor Galaxy Ace. The newer version still runs on Android 2.3 but Samsung has made some major improvements on the hardware front.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 measures 118.3 X 62.2 X 10.5 mm and weighs 122g. The phones looks consuming and is quite covenant and lightweight. On the front side, the phone sports a 3.8 inches Pls Tft capacitive touchscreen display which has a resolution of 480 X 800 pixels and supports up to 16 millions colors. The interface of the phone is powered by Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz version 4.0. Other applications on the phone comprise compass, image editor, document editor, Fm radio with Rds, calculator and much more.

The new Apple iPhone 4S has proven to be wildly popular, despite only having been available for a few days. It has already sold over 4 million units, more than the original iPhone 4 sold in the same time frame.

There has been a lot of media hype about its release, as there all the time is with Apple products. However, at the same time, Samsung also reported record-breaking sales of its latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Pitted against each other, which comes out on top? In this narrative I intend to find out, so if you are in the store for a new smartphone, or trying to conclude between the two, read on...

iPhone 4S
When Apple announced the iPhone 4S in its up-to-date keynote speech, they unveiled a amount of upgrades over the original iPhone 4. These included a new dual-core processor, upgraded digital camera, as well as a amount of innovative new applications, the most considerable of which is the new voice activated personal assistant called Siri. As mentioned, the Samsung Galaxy S2 runs on the Android Os, with the Samsung TouchWiz user interface over the top. Android and Apple's iOs are two very dissimilar operating systems, so it would be unfair to say one is better than the other, as in reality this is down to an individual's personal preference.

So which is the better smartphone?
Having been released more recently, the iPhone 4S has the benefit of along with more recently industrialized technology. There is no doubt about the fact that it has a great screen, camera, and processor, but the Samsung matches the iPhone in most these arenas. Apps are a large part of the motion of smartphones, and Apple's AppStore does offer many more apps than the Samsung Galaxy S2's provider, Android market, and the general consensus is that they are of better quality.

Apple has recently launched their new flagship smartphone the iPhone 4S. With the smartphone store flooded with high end devices, how does it stack up against the offering of other major players such as Samsung? In this article, I will effort to find out by pitting the iPhone 4S against the Samsung Galaxy S2.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 has proven to be a very popular device, as was the traditional Galaxy S. In fact, the Galaxy S2 was recently crowned "Phone of the Year" by machine magazine T3. This is no mean feat, inspecting the fact that it faced competition from impressive some devices, with the Motorola Atrix, Htc Sensation, Htc staggering S and Apple iPhone 4 all production the shortlist. The Samsung Galaxy S2 came out on top for a number of reasons.

The handset boasts all the bells and whistles of a high-end Android gismo in terms of software, with access to Android store and the Samsung TouchWiz Ui. Hardware wise, the gismo is impressive in pretty much every aspect. To furnish all the significant computing power to hardware and software alike, there is a 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor which aids many aspects of the phones performance, ranging from response times of the screen, multitasking, web browsing and many more. The camera boasts 8 megapixels, with 1080p video capture and comes with an Led flash along with a total package of adjustable settings and image enhancing features. The screen is also other impressive feature of the Galaxy S2. It is large, measuring 4.3 inches, with a pixel resolution of 480x 800. With Super Amoled capacitive Plus touchscreen technology, it is responsive, and it is celebrated for its capability to offer great display capability when in direct sunlight. The handset itself is very slim, at 8.5mm, and weighs just 116 grams.

The iPhone 4S is similar in many respects to the Samsung Galaxy S2, on paper at least. Software wise, the major dissimilarity is in the operating system, with iOs running the intuitive and customisable interface. There are many aspects of the hardware which are similar; the camera is 8 megapixels, with 1080p video just like the Samsung device. However Apple claims that the camera on the new iPhone has many unique features such as the lens technology and the speed at which the camera operates. The latter is thanks largely to the processor, which is a 1 Ghz dual-core Apple A4 processor. Whilst this is slightly less than the 1.2 Ghz offered by the Samsung, it will hardly be noticeable during day to day use. One of Apple's advantages over the competition is its multimedia ecosystem, which allows iPhones to incorporate with iTunes, iPod and AppStore. Whilst the likes of the Android store are impressive, and indubitably catching up with Apple, it has to be said that the AppStore is superior in terms of both capability and quantity of available Apps. The iPhone 4S has other benefit over the Samsung Galaxy S2; the fact that it is new. Therefore, Apple has had more time to consist of its latest technology in the handset. The new Siri and iCloud features are good examples of this, and it gives Apple the edge as this kind of technology was not colse to when the Samsung Galaxy S2 was released.

Choosing in the middle of the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S2 is a close call. Technically, it would be rather unfair to say that one is good than the other. As the manufacturer's flagship phones, each has its own strengths and weaknesses. I believe that the extreme choosing factor would be down to the individual's preference for either Android or iOs, but having said that, Apple may have the edge thanks to its all new features like Siri and iCloud, as Samsung currently has nothing similar to offer.

The new Siri and iCloud features are good examples of this, and it gives Apple the edge as this kind of technology was not colse to when the Samsung Galaxy S2 was released.

This month has seen the departure of any models from our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings, as newer models come out. These include:

Dell Inspiron Mini 9

The primary Dell netbook whilst small and contract was a compromised netbook, lacking the function keys, offering diminutive battery life, colour selection and storage and so it has exited our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings this month. However, the new larger Inspiron Mini 10 solves some of these problems. We've yet to report it, but on the face of it they've sorted out the keyboard, which is incidentally quite large and some other problems.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 remains very good value on a Vodafone contract however, from colse to £20 per month. Reconsider separating the bundle and buying an Inspiron Mini 9 and Usb modem contract separately and you would be spending colse to £30 more in total. Definetly worth a look...

Asus Eee Pc 1000

Asus introduced the Eee Pc 1000 after Msi brought out the first 10 inch netbook, the Msi Wind. With it's brother, the Eee Pc 901 they introduced a whole range of new features to the successful Eee Pc range together with large 6-cell batteries as thorough and the now industry thorough Intel Atom 1.6Ghz N270 processor.

The Msi Wind although loved by some has exited our rankings for two uncomplicated reasons. Firstly, there are now bigger brands with great products such as the Samsung Nc10. Secondly, even if you did want to buy an Msi Wind you'd be wasting your money buying one. Why? Because you can buy an coming 4211 instead! It's the same computer, with dissimilar logos, but about £50 cheaper depending on where you buy. Even then, you'd be losing out. The new Lg X110 is not in fact that new - it's a restyled version of the Msi Wind which looks quite attractive. It also comes with 3G embedded.

#10 - Asus Eee Pc 701

The first netbook unveiled by Asus at Computex Taipei in 2007, which kicked off this whole industry trend, has once again reappeared in our rankings. Yes, it isn't as suited as newer models, yes it does have a smaller screen and yes it does cost up to half the price of the newer models. True to its netbook routes, it is still one of the smallest, cheapest and lightest netbook.

If you were inspecting going for a funds mini laptop (fair sufficient while harsh economic times!) there are some unbranded models. But it's all the time worth buying branded particularly with computers since you can take benefit of the after sales maintain network. For what it is, the Asus Eee Pc 701 is still a bargain!

#9 - Asus Eee Pc S101

Although we've previously ranked this netbook quite highly, Cnet still ranks it extremely at their #3, but under it's yummy skin there's not very much there, especially for the price they're request - £449. On closer inspection there's a derated battery - 4-cell instead of 6 like it more functionable brothers or not integrated 3G selection like on the Eee Pc 901. At about twice the price of similar spec, yet more suited models it's harder to explain a higher ranking anymore.

#8 - Toshiba Nb100

The Toshiba mini laptop has climbed the rankings thanks to some staggering price cuts. The Editor has found Amazon.co.uk shaved £50 off the £299 Rrp, with LaptopsDirect cutting a added £50 off that while April in a clearance sale. The computer isn't as good as some competitors such as the Asus Eee Pc 901, but the build capability is pretty solid and the brand holds a lot in its name so we Reconsider it a safe buy.

#7 - Lg X110

This pretty new laptop is infact based upon the pioneering 10 inch laptop, the Msi Wind. The corners have been rounded off to give quite an engaging chassis, and the price tag isn't too bad either. The addition of integrated 3G allows for connectivity wherever you can get mobile phone signal, not yet available on competing models such as the Hp Compaq mini 700 or Samsung Nc10.

Overall: 3 stars - former ranking February 09: New ranking in this months Top Ten Mini Laptops, but the Msi Wind hit #9

#6 - Acer Aspire One

The Acer Aspire One family has grown to contain the new D150 10 inch netbook. We've decided to merge the two for the sake of rankings. The price range for new model is similarly good value to its smaller brother, significantly cheaper than the £300 odd you'd expect to pay for the very latest netbook.

Despite the addition to the range, the Acer has slipped slightly down the rankings as newer and great models enter the Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings.

#5 - Asus Eee Pc 901

The Asus Eee Pc 901 is a truly complete netbook. It substituted Asus' earlier 9 inch models, the Eee Pc 900 series introducing 6-cell batteries and Intel Atom processors as standard. Now available for Free on contract with Orange in a range of colours the options are vast. We Reconsider it the best 9 inch conveyable mini laptop.

At the time of writing, the Asus Eee Pc is available for colse to £25 per month on Orange Pay Month mobile Broadband.

#4 - Asus Eee Pc 1002Ha

The top end of the Asus Eee Pc range comes in the shape of the Eee Pc 1002Ha. complete with a restyled chassis with inspiration taken from the seductively sleek Eee Pc S101 and the insides of the Eee Pc 1000H. Unfortunately, they've stopped a hairs breath away from development something quite overwhelming by failing to offer the 6-cell battery as thorough like the earlier Eee Pc 901/1000 models. None the less it hit's #4 in our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings - a new entry.

#3 - Samsung Nc10

Samsungs low-key entry into the netbook world has been met with overwhelming sales success. The keyboard, crafted to make the letter keys larger and the amount keys smaller to help with typing is almost a match for an Hp netbook. Recently, O2 have partnered up with Samsung to offer a range of laptops on mobile broadband contract together with the Nc10. O2 offers one of the great networks, with it being the sole provider for the infamous Apple iPhone in the Uk. As well as providing an perfect network, they also offer free Home Broadband for mobile broadband customers.

#2 - Hp Compaq Mini 700

Not shifting from last months Top Ten Mini Laptops is the Hp Compaq mini 700 which boasts the best keyboard in the netbooking world. You'd think it definite to stretch it right to the edges woudn't you, but few mini laptops do so. Although it does leave the trackpad a tad on the slim side, it's a much great interface than other competing models. Holding it high in the rankings is it's price which has dropped significantly over the last few months to colse to £250-260, far less than the Samsung Nc10.

The Hp Compaq mini 700 is also available on mobile broadband contract, with Orange and 3, although all in we don't find it as good value on contract as the providers other offerings. For example, on Orange you pay a fiver extra for the Compaq over the Asus Eee Pc 901 for the same assistance - so it'll cost an extra £120 over the period of the contract.

The new Sony Vaio P Series mini laptop was unveiled at Ces. Sony's new 8 inch, £849 "lifestyle pc" (Sony are vary wary to avoid the term "netbook") is less than 2cm thick and only slightly larger than an office envelope. It comes with a world of features together with 3G mobile Broadband, inbuilt Gps, Windows Vista, battery life of up to 8 hours, Ssd storage of up to 128Gb and amazingly weighs less than 640g!
