Use of computers is now widespread. It is has become an determined machine in all spheres of human activities either it is personal, social, economic or political. The former desktop are being substituted by more sophisticated models with additional features and accessories. Many changes in the forms or contents were effected to make the expedient more favorable or user friendly. In the procedure of time users needed mobility to the computers as data warehouse became an prominent function and it became valuable to carry the stored contents along with them from place to place as part of their personal or official activities. The adage 'necessity is the mother of invention' proved factual. The quest for mobile computer ended with the birth of laptops.

Laptop is a smaller version of the desktop, but has all its features and accessories. Laptops attained popularity among computer users because of their mobility and convenience. Many of the prominent manufacturers like Dell, Compaq, Hp and Ibm brought out any types and models of laptops to cater the extra needs of the users. There are population who want laptops for exclusive personal use and to carry them wherever they go. They could store all confidential matters in their laptops. Company persons and executives find laptops as the most favorable machine which can be made part of their personal baggage so that the confidentiality of the stored data can be ensured. Teachers and students want laptops which is the most favorable medium to store all their texts and notes in a particular machine and to avoid carrying heavy loads of books and files.

Human thirst for innovations did not end up with the introduction of laptops. Much smaller versions of laptops entered the markets. They are known as notebooks. Students and others who want more ageement devices than laptops adored this new version. It was Ibm who introduced notebooks for the first time and made it favorite among consumers who needed the expedient only for less serious jobs like surfing internet etc. Its compactness and convenience to carry attracted many consumers. Again after some time someone else smaller expedient was introduced in the market which is known as net book. It is the smallest machine in the series of products in the computer family.

But the importance of desktops and laptops did not diminish after the arrival of notebooks and net books. The new products are found inadequate in many aspects. Even though smaller and ageement in size notebooks and net books have determined limitations. Depending on the nature and volume of work involved, users pick their respective versions. Unlike the desktop the mobile versions have to depend on batteries. But using them in a confined place where power supply is available, laptops can be operated by means of A/C adapters. Most of the laptops are ready with modular drive bays which allow the users more flexibility.

In the context of hectic lifestyles and the necessity for mobile devices in order to make work easier and convenient, the demands for laptops are on the increase. Despite the introduction of smaller versions like notebooks and netbooks, consumers are more inclined towards laptops due to its efficiency and efficacy.
